CONTRACTOR CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED IN ACCIDENT ON BROOKHAVEN LAB SITE

UPTON, NY - A construction worker employed by Bi-County Construction Corp. of Medford, NY was killed this morning in an industrial accident while working on the site of the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Bryan Schneck was run over by a payloader operated by another Bi-County employee. The two had been grading soil at a remote construction area on the BNL site as part of a sewer line replacement project. Schneck was setting the grade with a leveling stick when he was struck by the payloader. Schneck and the operator were the only workers in the area at the time.

Suffolk County police and DOE have begun investigating the incident.

The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. The payloader operator then dialed BNL's emergency number from a phone in the vehicle's cab, and notified the Laboratory police of the accident. A dispatcher immediately alerted BNL's Fire/Rescue Group and the Suffolk County Police Department.

The Laboratory's ambulance and emergency medical team arrived at the scene at 9:05 a.m. Suffolk County police arrived by 9:30 a.m. and began their investigation. They then notified the county coroner.

"All of us at the Laboratory are extremely sorry that this occurred, and I extend our deepest sympathy to the family," said BNL Interim Director Lyle Schwartz. "The investigations now under way will help determine how this accident occurred, and we will do everything we can to make sure that a tragic incident like this does not happen again at Brookhaven."
